I just adore this great idea from Jordan Ferney over at Oh Happy Day. I love an escort card that doubles as a favor and edible favors are a good way to make sure your guests are actually going to use (or eat, in this case) your favors, instead of just throwing them in a box or the trash can! Day of the Dead: Sugar Skull Recipe

November 2nd is the Mexican holiday known as "Day of the Dead" or "Dia de los Muertos". Is is a holiday that remembers and honors loved ones who have died. One of the most recognized symbols from the holiday are skulls and one of the most recognized desserts are the amazing sugar skulls that are created. Today I am sharing a recipe with you guys so that you can make your own at home!

Sugar Skulls:

Ingredients:

1 pound powdered sugar
4 egg whites
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch of salt
Cornstarch (enough to dust rolled balls with)

1. In a medium bowl, beat four egg whites, slowly adding cream of tartar and pinch of salt until peaks form.
2. Add powdered sugar and work with hands to make a semifirm paste. If mixture is too dry, add small amount of water. If too moist, add more powdered sugar.
3. Roll into balls and dust with cornstarch.
4. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until cool.
5. Form skulls and facial features by hand. Or use a mold, found at a craft store.
6. Allow to air dry overnight, before applying icing or decorations.
7. For colored skulls, add food coloring to the water BEFORE adding to dry mixture.
Makes 4 small sugar skulls.
Tips: For making fluffy egg whites, use older eggs; and beat eggs that have been brought to room temperature.

Ingredients for icing:

3 egg whites
1 pound powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1. Using electric mixer, add cream of tartar to egg whites and mix until icing peaks.
2. Fold in powdered sugar.
3. Keep in a tightly covered container until used.
Optional: Add small drops of food coloring.

Decorating:

Handle skulls carefully while decorating. For piped icing, snip corner off of quart-sized food storage bag. Fill half full of icing and softly squeeze to make designs.
Other options: Use canned icing. If skulls to be used for decorations only, use finger paint instead of icing. Use coconut dyed with food coloring for hair, eyebrows and whiskers.

Tips:

* Avoid making sugar skulls on rainy or humid days.
* If making a skull without a mold, have a picture handy for reference while shaping it.
* If a sink isn't available, fill containers with water and have paper towels to wash fingers.
* Always make a few extra skulls in case of mistakes or accidents.

Halloween Brownie Recipe

I just want to start off today by wishing everyone a very happy and safe Halloween! Tonight, all of the little kids will be running around the neighborhoods in search of candy to fill their treat buckets but what do you do with all of the leftover Halloween candy after the next few days have passed? Well that's easy....make Halloween Brownies! The perfect recipe to finish off all of those leftovers....(if you don't help to eat them all first!)

Halloween Brownies

Ingredients:

1 19.5 to 19.8 oz. brownie mix
1/2 cup canola oil
1/4 cup water
2 large eggs
2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 cup candy corn
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with cooking spray.

Mix brownie mix, oil, water and eggs with a spatula or wooden spoon, about 50 strokes, until well-combined.

Spread brownie batter in prepared pan. Bake 23 minutes.

Remove brownies from oven. Sprinkle mini marshmallows, candy corn and chocolate chips over brownies. Return to oven, and bake another 5-8 minutes.

Let brownies cool completely before cutting into squares.

Makes 24 large Halloween brownies.

Halloween Appetizer Recipe: Stuffed Roaches

For all of you putting together a Halloween party this weekend, or even just planning a fun dinner for the family, here is a fun recipe for a gross appetizer to add to your shopping lists!

Stuffed Roaches
This recipe makes 20-30 bite sized appetizers.

Ingredients.
1/3 C. cream cheese, softened
1/4 C. walnuts, chopped semi-fine
20-30 dates, pitted
Green Onions

Instructions.
1. In a small bowl, combine cream cheese and nuts til well mixed.

2. Gently fill each date with cream cheese/nut mixture (you may have to split the dates slightly).

3. Serve room temperature.

Tips.
* You can decorate your serving tray with some rubber roaches for extra effect.
*Use the tips of the green onions as antennae!

All you need is wire reinforced clothesline (you can find it at your local home improvement store), yarn, and wire clippers. Unique Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Halloween is the perfect time to get a little creative with your holiday decor. I love these unique pumpkin decorating ideas from Country Living. Use one of these fun ideas to do a little something different this year!

Bookshelf Tree

Step 1: Begin by experimenting with the placement of pumpkins on your shelves. Your tree should gradually widen toward the top, with multiple smaller gourds on higher shelves. Also, if there's a good deal of space between two shelves, you may need to stack pumpkins to fill it (as we did on the bottom shelf here). In that case, trim any stems that interfere with stacking stability. (Concerned about the heft of pumpkins on a particular shelf? Opt for lightweight, faux Funkins. $16-$42; funkins.com)

Step 2: Using this photo as a guide, draw the outline of a tree onto the pumpkins with a felt-tip pen. Start at the bottom and branch out as you move up. (You may need to use a stepladder to reach upper shelves.)

Step 3: Working one shelf at a time, remove the pumpkins and fill in your outlines with a fine-tip brush and black flat acrylic paint ($1.39 for two ounces; createforless.com) . Let dry and replace pumpkins in your bookcase.

Fireplace Arrangement

Step 1: Begin by experimenting with the placement of pumpkins in your fireplace. Once you're satisfied with the arrangement, trim any stems that interfere with stacking stability, then determine how many flames each gourd should get. (Use this photo as a guide.) Note where each pumpkin goes and dismantle the arrangement.

Step 2: Carve a hole in the bottom of each pumpkin, scoop out the pulp, and return the cut pieces.

Step 3: Print out flame templates and resize on a copier, scaling the images to fit your pumpkins.

Step 4: Cut out stencils as directed on the templates and affix to pumpkins with masking tape. Trace on the designs with a felt-tip pen.

Step 5: Remove stencils, then carefully carve along the drawn lines with an X-Acto knife. Affix a battery-operated votive candle in the base of each pumpkin with adhesive putty. Finish by restoring your arrangement.

Spider Web Filled Balloons

I love adding spooky, unexpected elements to my events for Halloween. I mean, I am all for the cute things too, but I really love the scary side of the season. Isn't that what it's all about?! One fun way to add a little spook to an otherwise basic balloon is to add some cobwebs to it. And I don't mean around the balloon or on the balloon....I mean IN the balloon! Crafty Crafty shares the how-to....

What you'll need:

- Hi-float (goop for inside your balloons)
- 11-inch clear latex balloons
- Small rubber spiders

Instructions

- Inject a little less than the usual amount of Hi-float into an clear balloon and rub it around to coat the inside.

- Put a small rubber spider inside the balloon.

- Inflate the balloon to about 75% of the full-size with air.

- Seal the balloon with a plastic disk or clip. Let it dry overnight. Place the balloon out in the open where there is good air circulation. It must be very dry in order to form the spider web.

- The next day remove the clip and deflate the balloon.

- Hold the balloon by the stem and the top and stretch it a few times to separate the dry film from the wall of the balloon.

- Slowly inflate the balloon with Helium or air.

- When the balloon is almost full-size the Hi-Float film will separate from the wall in several places and hang inside the balloon to form a spider web.

-If the coating does not separate, deflate the balloon, stretch it a couple of more times and re inflate it.

Proof Sunglasses

This weekend I had the pleasure of working with some talented vendors from Utah on a really fun photo shoot. Although I can't share any of the pictures with you guys yet, I did get to design the look and feel of the shoot around some really cool sunglasses from Proof. The sunglasses are sustainable and hand made from wood. Each pair is unique and comes in a variety of colors and shapes. Proof also donates a portion of their proceeds to help organizations that are doing BIG things in the world. After working on the shoot this weekend and getting to see them and touch them first hand, I need to order myself a pair or two...they were so cool! Starting at about $90, these babies are one of a kind and so hip. Can't wait to share the pics with you guys soon!

Cute Wedding Idea

I love (!) this idea that I saw on The Knot. For this wedding, the couple wanted their guests to learn a little more about all of the special people they had in their bridal party so they set up a little side table at the reception titled "Meet the Maids!" Each bridesmaid had a framed bio, and black and white head shot, that guests could read to learn more about them and how they met the bride and groom. Such a great way to show your bridal party how important each one of them is to you! Love it!

Halloween Cocktail Recipe

What has 8 legs, is black, and is peering out at you from your martini glass? Today's recipe of course! This cocktail is aptly named the Black Widow. Can you see the reasoning behind it? I love this drink and the presentation of it because your guests will believe a big black spider is sitting in the bottom of their glass when you hand them this little baby. So fun, so freaky, and so delicious! This recipe is brought to you by Janelle of Talk of Tomatoes. Her measuring techniques are original, so here's her recipe and directions. Enjoy!

The Black Widow

Cream de Cassis
Vodka
triple sec
fresh lemon juice
Pomegranate juice
licorice strings

For two cocktails (or one cocktail shaker): 2 parts cassis, 3 parts vodka, 1 part triple sec, 1 part lemon juice, 1 part pomegranate. Sorry, even though I bought a little measuring glass for shots, I never seem to use it. I make cocktails with ratios. If I were over my skillet, each ‘part’ would translate to a ‘glugg’ of olive oil. Just think in fractions: for the Black Widow, your shaker is 8 parts. Go from there. Too much of this, too little of that: trust me, the spider really won’t care one way or another.

DIY Vintage Crates

Think of using them as a fun vessel to serve food or drinks, display blankets and pillows for a movie night, or even wedding favors. The possibilities are endless!

Cherry & Nectarine Cobbler with Cinnamon Cream Biscuits

The nectarine's have made it to the grocery store shelves so now is the best time to make this delicious cobbler! It takes less than an hour to make, so whip up a pan this weekend!

Ingredients:

4 c sweet cherries, pitted and halved
3 c ripe nectarines, sliced
½ c sugar, divided
2¼ c unbleached all-purpose flour, plus 2 T, divided
Zest from one lemon
1 T lemon juice
1¼ t ground cinnamon, divided
¼ t baking soda
1¾ t baking powder
¼ t salt
½ c (1 stick) cold butter, in tablespoon-size slices
¼ c buttermilk
½ c heavy cream
¼ c Turbinado sugar

Cherry Nectarine Crumble:
1 c rolled oats
½ c flour
1/3 c brown sugar
½ t cinnamon
Pinch of salt
½ c butter, chilled and cut into tablespoon-size pieces

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Combine cherries and nectarines in a large bowl. Stir in ¼ cup sugar, 2 tbsp flour, lemon zest, juice, and ¼ tsp cinnamon and mix well. Pour into an 11x8-inch baking dish and bake until fruit juices begin to bubble around edges of pan, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, to make the biscuits, combine remaining flour, ¼ cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add all butter pieces at once and cut into flour mixture using your fingers or a pastry blender. Incorporate flour just until the mixture is in large crumbles (overworking it will create tough biscuits). Stir in buttermilk and heavy cream, and mix until all ingredients are combined and the dough comes together.

Remove fruit from oven. With a large spoon, drop biscuit dough on top of hot fruit, leaving a bit of space between each biscuit. Sprinkle with Turbinado sugar and return to oven. Bake until the biscuits are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped, about 20 to 25 minutes. Spoon biscuits and berries into serving bowls and serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Variations: Substitute cardamom for the cinnamon; try peaches or rhubarb (or both!) for the nectarines; turn it into a crisp by topping the raw fruit with your favorite topping.

Follow the recipe for the Cobbler, but place this topping on your raw fruit before baking. For the Cherry Nectarine Crumble: Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a medium size bowl. Add the butter and cut into dry ingredients with your hands, mixing to a coarse crumble. Sprinkle over fruit and bake until fruit is bubbling and top is browned, about 25 to 30 minutes.

North Carolina Wedding

I love today's wedding from DIY Wedding. The wedding took place off of the southern coast of North Carolina at Bald Head Island.
First of all, the dress is fabulous! I love that the bride took a chance with such a fun style! The bright color palette of pretty oranges and yellows, throughout the ceremony space and the reception, are so pretty together and I love the guest book alternative they used....a wedding paper chain garland. Too cute! The "What Should We Name Our Kids" book is also a super fun touch. I'm sure the guests had a blast adding their opinions into that one!

The smell of Fall is in the air and I can't seem to stop daydreaming about warm sweaters, hot chocolate, and cool nights by the fire. I am also looking forward to having friends over for a cozy dinner party. This great place card idea, that I spotted on Martha Stewart, is super simple and cheap. All you need are some leaves, which should be pretty easy to find during the season, an ink pad in your choice of color (white was used in the above photo), and rubber stamps to stamp guests' names. And you can get creative with all types of items....rocks, shells, and even eggs can be used in place of the leaves. Let your imagination run wild! It is such an easy way to create a really chic look for your table this Fall!

Monopoly Party

Jamee, from Setting the Mood has done it again! I am always in awe of her creativity and this Monopoly themed table is no exception! The large letters, which spelled out "Play", were created using Monopoly game tokens, hotels, money, deed cards, and other game pieces. I love the custom Water Works and Electric Company cookies and the Chex mix, with the custom mini cookies, in the blue scalloped containers, are great. The Scottie dog wrapped licorice is too cute and the Community Chest boxes, filled with chocolate money, are the perfect favor idea! Way too go Jamee. Fantastic work!

I spotted this cool little craft idea over on ReadyMade and thought it would be a fabulous accent piece on an outdoor table for an evening dinner party or even cute little touches added to an urban wedding ceremony or reception. Summer Melon Cocktail Recipe

This past weekend was a scorcher here in Utah and I wish I would have had this recipe lying around to enjoy while relaxing out on the deck. Oh well, there's always tonight! This cocktail is perfect to serve throughout the Summer months when ripe melon is readily available and fresh. All I can say is...Delish!

Melon Melody

Punch bowl and glasses
4 cups pineapple juice
2 cups vodka
3/4 cup Midori (melon liqueur)
1/2 cup cream of coconut
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 small cantaloupe, chilled
1/4 small honeydew melon, chilled
1-inch-thick slice of small seedless watermelon, chilled
4 cups crushed ice

Mix all of the liquid ingredients in the punch bowl.
Cut the melons into 1/2-inch balls using the smaller end of a melon baler. Thread the melon balls in combinations onto 8 large cocktail picks or small skewers. If you have more melon than you need, cut additional balls and float them in the punch for added color.
Add the crushed ice to the punch.
Garnish individual glasses with the melon ball swizzles and serve immediately.

Grapefruit Cupcakes

I don't know about you guys...but I love grapefruit! I think one of the reasons I like it so much, is because I feel like I am being healthy when I eat them (even though I tend to top mine with about a pound of sugar!) So what better way to get your sweet grapefruit fix, than a cupcake?! I especially love the use of the candied peel on top! Can't wait to try these babies! Yum!

Grapefruit Cupcakes:

1 1/2 cups white flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 cup white sugar
3 tsp grated grapefruit zest (approximately one large grapefruit)
1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt (I used nonfat)
4 eggs
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup vegetable oil

Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a muffin tin with liners and set aside.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt into a medium-sized bowl. In another bowl, combine 1 cup of sugar and zest, rubbing between your fingers until moistened and fragrant. Whisk in the yogurt, eggs, and vanilla. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. With a spatula, fold the vegetable oil into the batter until incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin pan and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Grapefruit Curd:

8 large eggs yolks
1/2 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
finely grated zest of 1 ruby red grapefruit
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces
*For frosting: 1 cup whipping cream, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Method:
Combine egg yolks, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, half of the zest, and sugar in a saucepan; whisk to combine. Cook over med-high heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon, about 10 minutes.

Turn heat down to low. Add salt. Begin adding the butter, piece by piece, stirring constantly. Once you have added in all the butter (and the mixture is thick and beautiful), remove from heat. Strain through a fine sieve into a bowl. Stir in the remaining zest. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the curd to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate until chilled and set.

To make the frosting, start by whipping the cream, vanilla and confectioners sugar until you have stiff whipping cream (be careful not to over whip!). Combine equal parts whipping cream with grapefruit curd, and gently fold together with a spatula. Spread atop cupcakes!

Candied Grapefruit Peels:

Ingredients:
1 Large Ruby Red Grapefruit
Water
Sugar

With a vegetable peeler, peel off thin strips of the grapefruit rind. Use a small pairing knife to cut strips into thin strips. Meanwhile, bring 1 part water to 1 part sugar to boil in a small saucepan (I used 1 cup of each).

Add grapefruit peels and boil over med heat for 30-45 minutes. Strain, reserving liquid (which is now a grapefruit infused simple syrup, which you can use for all sorts of delicious things.)

Pour about 1 cup white sugar in a bowl. Toss candied peels in sugar, then spread peels out on foil or wax paper to cool and air dry. These are best after a few hours of drying time. I made them the night before I used them for my cupcakes!

To assemble the cupcakes…simply frost cupcakes with the whipped grapefruit frosting. Top with a dollop of grapefruit curd and a couple pieces of candied grapefruit curd. And, of course – enjoy!

Whale Themed Birthday

You might have stumbled upon a few of these pictures yesterday if you had been visiting a little site know as Amy Atlas. Yep, that's right...we were featured on her site yesterday! (Eeek, pinch me!) And now I get to share some more fun pics and details with you guys!

This shoot was for a little boy's 4th birthday party. I wanted to have a theme that worked well for summer yet still had a strong boy feeling so I decided upon a "Whale of a Tale" themed birthday with a bright green and navy blue color palette.

I styled a dessert table featuring mini blueberry pies, caramel squares, rock candy, dipped marshmallows, custom sugar cookies, cake truffles, chocolate covered apples (I find caramel too sticky for little kids!), chocolate dipped oreo's, and a custom plaid birthday cake, with blue and green layers nestled inside. To create the backdrop for the dessert table I used netting and paper pinwheels to add a cute whimsical touch.

For lunch, I created a fun under the sea themed plate with peanut butter and jelly whale shaped sandwich cut-outs, blueberry air bubbles, and macaroni and cheese sand. How fun!

Fun beach themed tables, with blue and white striped beach towels used as the table linens and mini green beach umbrellas dotted the lawn area. Under the sea themed flower arrangements nestled in sand with blue marble "shells", dotted blue plates, and mini blue cups covered the tables. I also created whale shaped napkins at each setting. Instead of using chairs I wanted to do something different so I used bright green pillows on the lawn as a fun, and comfy alternative for the little party guests.

The invitation was nestled in a bright blue box, tied with green and blue polka dotted ribbon. The invite, once opened, revealed a fun "sand box" with a few sea shells.

Such a fun shoot and playing with our adorable little model Treyce wasn't a bad way to spend our day either!

Ice Cream Social Bridal Shower

You might have seen this recent ice cream social bridal shower shoot that we did for the August issue of Best Wedding Sites magazine. We styled this shoot using a pink, purple, and gray color palette. We styled a drink station, a dessert table, and a table scape.

We used frozen blackberries in the glasses, instead of ice, to add a touch of purple to the light pink glasses.

The dessert table held various ice cream themed desserts including ice cream cone shaped cookies, ice cream cone cake pops, banana split bites, chocolate covered cherries, strawberry milkshakes, strawberry oreos, a custom made vanilla butter cream cake, and vintage candy jars filled with marshmallows, strawberry whopper candies, and waffle cones.

If you can't tell...the custom made cake was designed to look like a Ben & Jerry's ice cream carton, instead using the names of the bride and groom.

We made custom stamped napkins to fit in with the theme of the event. We also featured a tutorial on how to make your own for the magazine post too!

The table scape featured quilted gray and white linens, vintage cream colored ceramic plates, ice cream spoons, vintage ice cream sundae cups, and centerpieces filled with pink and purple flowers.

The favors were placed at each guests plate. The brown boxes were tied with light pink ribbon and a tag hung from each box that read "Life Is Short, Eat Dessert First!" Little stacks of french vanilla macaroons, filled with purple vanilla cream were in each favor box.

Surrounding the tables were silver chiavari chairs. To create the unique weaved effect on the backs of the chairs we used silver chair ties, weaved through the chair backs.

Wedding Book Alternative: The Flip Board

I love this idea that I spotted on Kate Harrison Photography, (found via Bridal Bar Blog). This cute idea is a great alternative to a traditional guest book. It is called a Flip Board.

The first step is to create a board filled in with numbers and to have a small Velcro strips coordinating with each number. Enlarge a picture of the bride and groom, making sure that it is the same size as the board. Cut the picture into small square pieces or “chips” so that there are enough chips to fill each corresponding number. Each chip should be numbered in accordance to the numbers on the board in order to put the picture of the bride and groom back together. At the reception, each guest can write personal advice or well wishes to the couple on the back of one of the photo "chips". Each chip should then be placed where the matching number is on the board. Once all of the guests have arrived and filled out their chip, the board will display the large completed picture and the bride and groom will have a fun piece to showcase!

So fun and easy to do! Love it!

Red Tablescape

I am loving the color red lately and this creative tablescape from Brooklyn Bride is no exception. The floral centerpieces are gorgeous but the showstopper is the awesome vases on the table. You might need to look twice, because those great vintage vases are really not vases at all. They are basic black boxes, painted with chalk paint, and the vases are drawn on! How creative is that?! I love the playfulness of the centerpieces, the bright fabric, and the gorgeous florals. So fun and fresh! Love!

The Bloody Geisha

3 oz Tomato Juice

Today, I wanted to share the adorable save the date, one of my clients used for their movie themed wedding that is taking place this Saturday. The wedding is being held at Sundance Resort, where the original Sundance film festival was held. They decided to go with a movie themed wedding because of the movie history at the venue. The save the dates were created by Custom Movie Poster, and were mailed in an envelope sealed with camera film. I can't wait to show you guys all of the details we are creating for the wedding! But for now...back to work! I have a lot to do before Saturday!

Fourth of July Cocktail Recipe

This cocktail, from Guy Fieri of Food Network, looks divine, and is perfect to serve guests at your fourth of July fete!

Ingredients

1 ounce watermelon schnapps
1 big splash cranberry juice
1 very thin slice jalapeno or serrano pepper
1 slice lemon
1 slice lime
1 1/2 ounces tequila
1/4 ounce blue curacao
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Watermelon wedge, for garnish (optional)

Directions

Mix the schanpps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass.

Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Garnish with watermelon, if desired.

Bourbon Peaches and Cream Popsicles

I think it's pretty much safe to say that Summer is finally here! (I hope that doesn't jinx us all!) The weather in Utah has been gorgeous the last few days! The kids are out for Summer and it's time to find activities to keep them entertained. But the fun isn't just for the kids! It's time to make your own adult fun....and one way to do that is to make these AMAZING Bourbon Peaches and Cream Popsicles from Endless Simmer. Pop a few of these babies in the freezer and break them out one afternoon on your deck or porch while the kids are away! Talk about a great treat! Yum!

Makes 18-22 popsicles

· 1 cup ripe peaches, crushed

· ¼ cup bourbon

· ½ cup simple syrup, cooled (recipe follows)

· 2 cups plain yogurt

Instructions:

1. Peel and slice peaches. Use a potato masher to crush the peaches. Combine crushed peaches and bourbon in a bowl, mix to combine. Add the simple syrup in slowly and taste to preference. Add yogurt to bourbon peach mixture and combine.

2. Score top edge of Dixie cup with scissors for easy peeling. Pour mixture into Dixie cups. Freeze for two hours or until mixture starts to solidify enough to hold a popsicle stick upright. Continue to freeze until mixture is completely frozen into a popsicle, about 5-6 hours. Peel off Dixie cups. Serve.

Simple Syrup

· ¼ cup water

· ¼ sugar

Instructions:

1. Place water and sugar in a sauce pan over medium heat. Heat and stir until sugar dissolves.

A few notes:

· Use the simple syrup sparingly. Taste the mixture as you mix to make sure it’s to your liking. Use more for a sweeter tasting popsicle and less for a popsicle that will have a stronger bourbon flavor.

· If you do not have ripe peaches on hand, use canned peaches in light syrup (make sure to drain before use). If you use canned peaches, bypass the simple syrup.

· To shave some time, use vanilla yogurt instead of plain yogurt to skip the simple syrup portion. Keep in mind this version will be much sweeter as vanilla flavored yogurt is sweetened. If you are using this in combination with canned peaches, rinse the peaches and add 2-3 tablespoons bourbon in addition to the ¼ cup in the recipe. The added tablespoons will offset any sweetness that may overpower the bourbon.

· Of course you can omit the bourbon completely for a simple Peaches and Cream Popsicle.

DIY Cupcake Wrapper Doilies

I love this cute project that I found over at Intimate Weddings. These cupcake wrappers are perfect for any event that you want to add a little vintage or delicate touch to. They are so pretty and so super easy! You have no excuse...make some today! Find the template here.

You will need:

paper doilies (Mine were just over 11 inches.)

pencil

scissors

glue stick

cupcake wrapper template

Instructions:

Place doilie on a flat surface.

Cut out cupcake wrappers from the template. Place the cut out wrappers on the doilie.

Trace along the inside curve and at the ends. Do not trace the outside curve.

Cut out the cupcake wrapper.

Using a glue stick, add glue to one of the edges of the wrapper. Wrap around cupcake and adhere. Fini! Wasn’t that a breeze? BTW, if you don’t want white cupcake wrappers, you can buy paper doilies in a myriad of colors online.

Oreomisu

The name says it all....do I need to say anything more than YUM! A perfect combination of Oreo's and Tiramisu....this little dessert would be a perfect dressed up dessert to take to a BBQ party this summer or to whip up for an anniversary dinner. Heck, who am I kidding?! This little wonder would be perfect any old time! Thanks to the Clumbsy Cookie, for this wonderful recipe. I can't wait to make my own! (And I don't think I'm going to share....)

OREOMISU

(for 2)

6 oreo cookies
2 tbsp mascarpone cheese
1 tsp icing sugar
2 drops vanilla extract
¼ cup milk

Break apart the oreo cookies and scrape the filling to a bowl and set aside the wafers. To the oreo fillings add the mascarpone and icing sugar and mix well with a small wisk. Mix the milk and the vanilla extract and make crumbs out of 2 wafers (you can do this with your fingers or press them with the bottom of a glass or roling pin).

In small serving plates arrange alternatively the chocolate wafers dipped in the milk and the mascarpone cream. Start with a wafer and use 5 for each oreomisu, finish with mascarpone cream. Top with the wafer crumbs and refrigerate.

Photography Tips for Kids Parties

I have been so busy this week preparing for 2 photo shoots I am doing this weekend, which I am super excited about and can't wait to be able to share with you guys! So today, I thought it was only fitting to share some great photography tips to use when shooting your next event. These tips come from Rebecca Watkins of Rebecca Watkins Photography, found via Pure Joy Events.

If possible, hire a professional - You don't want to waste your time trying to get the perfect shot and missing all of the great party moments so let someone else worry about the pictures and enjoy your event. After all, that's what all of your hard work and energy went into!

Capture the details- There are a lot of details that are put into a party, and they're must have photos. Once everything is set up and before all of the kids are there, go around and take some quick photos. Especially get photos of the main/food table, shots of any work stations that are set up, banners, and the cake. Try getting different angles of the tables, and if there are small details (eg.: decorations on the cake) get in close.

Always have your camera ready- Kids are unpredictable. One minute they're perfectly fine just playing with their Star Wars action figure or Bratz doll and the next they're running over to play Rock Band. If you put your camera down even for a second, you may miss the chance to capture a smile or one of the kids running around with a Transformers mask on. It doesn't have to constantly have to be up to your face, but have it at hand.

Take a knee and get down to their level- Some of the best photos you can take of children are when you're at eye level with them.

Understand your lighting- Understand what your main light source is and in what direction its coming from. If you're out in a bright sunny day, toward the sun. Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows, and can blow out the highlights in your photos and if you turn your subject away from the sun then you avoid the extreme shadows and highlights. Another option is to take them into the shade of a tree or of a house. Using the shade will diffuse the sun and make soft shadows and highlights.

Don't always center your subject- One of the most common mistakes is putting your subject directly in the center of every single photo. Mix it up a little. Split your frame up in thirds horizontal and vertical (think of tic-tac-toe) and put your subject in one of the thirds. This spices up your composition and can provide some great results.

Have fun- I think this is the most self-explanatory thing you could do. Enjoy the party (and a piece of cake).

Lip Balm Recipe and Tutorial

After all of the problems with blogger last week I am back this week and bringing you a fun craft and activity idea for a little girl's birthday party, sleepover, or spa party. What would be more fun than making your very own lip balm?! It's easy and a great idea for a party favor! Who knows, you might even enjoy it too! ;)

Lip Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

3 teaspoons grated unbleached beeswax

5 teaspoons carrier oil (sunflower, castor, or jojoba)

6 or 7 drops essential oil

1 teaspoon honey, for flavor

Instructions:

1. Melt the beeswax and carrier oil together in the top of a double boiler, stirring to combine. Remove from heat; add honey and essential oil. Mix thoroughly so the honey does not clump.

2. To add a little color, stir in a tiny dab of lipstick with a coffee stirrer. Pour the mixture into containers; let sit 20 minutes before covering or moving. For glossier lip balm, use 2 teaspoons wax and 8 teaspoons carrier oil.

DIY Wedding Project: Paper Blossom Pomander

Looking for a little creative touch to add to your wedding? Or maybe just a DIY project? These adorable Paper blossom pomanders, from Fancy Pants Weddings, are fab. They would be so cute carried by little flower girls or as a cute addition to the aisle! Darling!

Supplies:

Yellow Marvy flower paper punch
Blue Marvy flower paper punch
pearl headed straight pins
styrofoam ball (size depends on how big you want your finished pomander)
card stock in desired color
Multi-setting glue gun
Glue sticks

Optional:

green florist tape
wooden dowel
3 yards of ribbon

Punch a variety of large and small flowers from your chosen card stock. You can also use more than one color.

Place the pearl headed pin through the paper flower and push into the styrofoam ball.

Continue adding flowers to the ball, varying the sizes of the flowers and overlapping the blossoms so you are covering all of the styrofoam.

If added security is desired, add a small dab of hot glue, set your glue gun for stun, I mean low heat, under the flower. If you are using the hydrangea ball as a flower girl pomander I highly suggest the extra strength of gluing the flowers into place.

To make hydrangea ball into a hanging pomander:

Take 1.5 feet of ribbon and make one large loop, knotting the ends. Pin the loop into the pomander and using your glue gun on low heat setting, throughly glue the ribbon loop into place. Allow the glue to dry before moving your pomander.

Make a multi looped bow and glue it over where your ribbon handle meets the pomander.

"Hi, I'm Ashley's mom, Danielle. Ashley asked me to share one of my favorite recipes', in honor of Mother's Day, and I wanted to select something that represented me. This recipe is more of a Fall meal but can be enjoyed year round. It's one of our family's favorites! I hope you guys enjoy and Happy Mother's Day to all!"

Pasta with Creamy Pumpkin Sauce

Ingredients:

1 16 oz. package penne pasta, uncooked
1 8 oz. package cream cheese, cubed
1 cup grated 100 % Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1/2 cup milk (I use 1%)
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 tsp. ground red pepper
ground nutmeg to taste

Directions:

Cook pasta as directed on package. Place cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, butter, and milk in a large saucepan. Cook on low heat until cream cheese is melted, stirring frequently. Add pumpkin and spices. Cook until thoroughly heated, stirring occasionally. Add pasta, toss lightly. Serve topped with additional Parmesan cheese if desired. You can also add chicken or shrimp if you want. Substitute the milk, and cream cheese with low fat or fat free varieties for a lower calorie option.

Mint Julep Recipe

It's that time again....The Kentucky Derby is here! One of the things that the Kentucky Derby is known for (besides the horses and the hats) is the drinks! One the most popular drinks served at the Derby is none other than the Mint Julep! If you can't make it to the Derby this year, this recipe will bring the Derby to you!

Ingredients

1 lemon, rinsed
About 2 teaspoons sugar
5 fresh mint sprigs (3 to 5 in.), rinsed and drained
About 1 1/2 cups crushed or shaved ice
1/4 cup bourbon
About 2 tablespoons club soda

Preparation

1. With a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife, pare a 2-inch strip of peel (yellow part only) from the lemon, then cut into long, thin shreds. Cut lemon in half and rub 1 cut side on the rim of a glass (10 to 12 oz.) to moisten; save lemon for other uses. Pour 2 teaspoons sugar on a small plate and dip moist glass rim in it to coat evenly, then pour sugar into glass.
2. Add 4 mint sprigs to glass. With a wood spoon, crush mint sprigs with sugar to bruise the leaves and release the herb's flavor. Fill glass with ice. Add bourbon, then fill to rim with club soda. Let stand until glass is frosty, about 2 minutes. Garnish with lemon peel and remaining mint sprig. Sip julep through a straw, adding more sugar to taste.

Tequila Cocktail Recipes

One of the best parts (in my opinion) of Cinco de Mayo is the cocktails! Tequila is Mexico's national drink and what better time to incorporate some into your own Fiesta! There are actually a few different types of tequila. In case you want to impress your friends with some trivia, or are just curious, here is a great breakdown, provided by Divine Dinner Party:

Tequila Blanco/Plata: (White/Silver Tequila) This is a clear version of tequila, which isn't aged before bottled-- it's placed in the bottle right after being distilled (or, sometimes, is aged a maximum of two months before bottling).

Tequila Joven/Oro: (Young/Gold Tequila) This is going to be your typical bottle of Jose Cuervo, for instance, and is a blend of Tequila blanco and one of the more aged varieties described below.

Tequila Reposado: ("Rested" Tequila) This is a tequila that's slightly aged, generally in oak barrels, for less than a year. This is what gives it its characteristic color.

Tequila Añejo: ("Vintage" Tequila) Like a Spanish wine, añejo means that a particular drink is well-aged, a minimum of one year (but generally less than three).

Tequila Extra Añejo: (Extra Aged Tequila) This is a fairly new category for tequilas, and means that a tequila was aged three years or more in oak barrels, which makes it very smooth and gives it a characteristic flavor.

Cinco De Mayo is coming up next week and what better excuse to bust out the tortilla chips, margaritas, and enchiladas! I love Mexican food and today I am going to share some of my favorite, EASY recipes with you. Now you have no excuse....so get cooking!

The Best Chicken Enchilada's....ever.
(Trust me, I make them all the time!)

1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Condensed Cheddar Cheese Soup

1/2 cup milk

2 cups diced cooked chicken

1/2 cup Picante Sauce (I recommend Medium, it adds more flavor. Mild was a little bland).

1 can (about 4 ounces) chopped green chiles

1 teaspoon chili powder

8 flour tortillas (8-inch), warmed

Stir the soup and milk in a small bowl.
Stir 2 tablespoons soup mixture, chicken, picante sauce, chiles and chili powder in a medium bowl.
Spoon about 1/3 cup chicken mixture down the center of each tortilla. Roll the tortillas around the filling and place seam-side down in a greased 3-quart shallow baking dish.
Pour the remaining soup mixture over the filled enchiladas. Cover the baking dish.
Bake at 375°F. for 35 minutes or until the filling is hot.

Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon Mexican vanilla extract
2 (8 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent rolls
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1/4 cup honey

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Beat the cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar and the vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
Unroll the cans of crescent roll dough, and use a rolling pin to shape each piece into 9x13 inch rectangles. Press one piece into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture into the baking dish, then cover with the remaining piece of crescent dough. Stir together 3/4 cup of sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Dot the mixture over the top of the cheesecake.
Bake in the preheated oven until the crescent dough has puffed and turned golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and drizzle with honey. Cool completely in the pan before cutting into 12 squares.

DIY Doily Chandelier

I am still swooning over the gorgeous pictures I found over at Martha Stewart Weddings. How incredible is this DIY chandelier made from doilies?! It is stunning! The chair swags are breathtaking as well. The perfect combination of DIY and chic. Love!
Here's how to make your own:

You will need:

A 12-inch and 24-inch wreath form
ribbon
4-inch doilies
thread
needle

1. Fold 4-inch doilies in half twice. Open them, and scrunch them up a little at the center to give them the ruffled appearance of flowers.

2. Thread flowers onto yarn to make strands 12 to 16 inches long, and tie to wreath. Attach extra flowers to wire with double-sided tape to fill in gaps.

3. Hang with ribbon, placing the smaller ring lower than the larger. (Use pushpins or adhesive hooks to secure to ceiling.)

Marshmallow Recipe

Today's post features a super easy recipe that works great for dessert bars, favors, gifts, or are just yummy to eat all by themselves! What am I talking about......Marshmallows! You can make them in so many different flavors, and shapes and sizes so they are great to customize to meet the needs of the events you are planning. They are so versatile, easy to make, and tasty to boot!

Homemade Marshmallows

Ingredients

3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 cup ice cold water, divided
12 ounces granulated sugar, approximately 1 1/2 cups
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
Nonstick spray

Directions

Place the gelatin into the bowl of a stand mixer along with 1/2 cup of the water. Have the whisk attachment standing by.
In a small saucepan combine the remaining 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar, corn syrup and salt. Place over medium high heat, cover and allow to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Uncover, clip a candy thermometer onto the side of the pan and continue to cook until the mixture reaches 240 degrees F, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Once the mixture reaches this temperature, immediately remove from the heat.
Turn the mixer on low speed and, while running, slowly pour the sugar syrup down the side of the bowl into the gelatin mixture.
Once you have added all of the syrup, increase the speed to high. Continue to whip until the mixture becomes very thick and is lukewarm, approximately 12 to 15 minutes. Add the vanilla during the last minute of whipping. While the mixture is whipping prepare the pans as follows.
Combine the confectioners' sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl.
Lightly spray a 13 by 9-inch metal baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture and move around to completely coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return the remaining mixture to the bowl for later use.
When ready, pour the mixture into the prepared pan, using a lightly oiled spatula for spreading evenly into the pan. Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover. Reserve the rest for later. Allow the marshmallows to sit uncovered for at least 4 hours and up to overnight.
Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares using a pizza wheel dusted with the confectioners' sugar mixture. Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining mixture, using additional if necessary. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Makes about 9 dozen.

(Found via Quincy Cottage) The tables were created for the Macy's Spring Bohemian Gardens event a few years ago and are truly stunning! The pictures speak for themselves....Enjoy!

Little "Cutie" Baby Shower

Some of you may have seen this baby shower featured on Pizzazzerie yesterday but I recently had the opportunity to style this amazing "Cutie" themed baby shower. If you couldn't tell Cuties (as in the little citrus oranges) were the theme for the event. The mom-to-be didn't want to find out the sex of the baby (how often does that happen these days?!) so it was fun finding a theme and color scheme that didn't lean towards one gender more than another. I came upon the "Little Cutie" theme while walking around in the grocery store, and the party hostess loved the idea! I kept everything orange related from the food, decor, and even the invites.

Heather from Chickabug created the invitations. I added the green and orange ribbons, that I weaved through the top, to give it more of a "country" feel. I wanted the event to have a "fresh from the orchard" feeling.

I created a juice bar where guests were served virgin "Tangerita's" and ice water. I dressed up the ice cubes by freezing slices of Cuties in them and in others I also shaved some of the orange peel and froze them in ice cubes as well. I loved the little "Organic" tags that I tied onto the Margarita glass stems!

For the table, I used Cuties as place cards, using leaves with guests' names printed on them. I had a local flower shop create centerpieces using Cuties and orange roses. They turned out gorgeous! For the main centerpiece on the table, I used tree branches and adorned the branch with leaf cutouts, green polka dot ribbon, and hanging Cuties, to create a miniature orange tree! They turned out so cute!

I also created a dessert table, resembling a fruit stand, featuring orange cupcakes, orange cake pops, and orange cookies. The cupcakes were topped off with edible sugar leaves to resemble oranges! Guests took home little fruit baskets, filled with yummy orange sugar cookies, and lined with green checkered tissue paper.

Guests were served various orange flavored food including "Cutie" salad with fennel, feta, and honey citrus dressing and orange ginger chicken with orange salsa. I loved the appetizers that were served! They were Cutie kabobs, which were paired with a honey mint yogurt dip. They were created using Cutie wedges, strawberries, and mint leaves. They were a big hit!

The shower was fabulous and all of the guests left with their full daily dose of Vitamin C!

I worked with some AMAZING vendors! A big thank you to all of them!

Pretzel Recipe

It's almost time for carnivals, the circus, and outdoor events of all kinds...and what's the best part about those events? The food! Today I decided to feature a recipe that some think of as difficult but in reality is really quite easy! Pretzel's are so yummy and so fun to customize with different toppings and dips...make some with your family or friends this weekend! I know I will!

Soft Pretzels:

1 cup warm water (110F), divided
2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast (1 package)
2 tbsp honey
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt

2 tbsp baking soda
1 cup cold water

In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup of the warm water with yeast. Stir to combine and let stand for 5 minutes, until foamy. Stir in the rest of the water, honey, 1 1/2 cups flour and salt, mixing until smooth. Add remaining flour a few tablespoons at a time, stirring until the dough comes together into a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, about 4-5 minutes. Place dough into a lightly greased bowl and let rise, covered with plastic wrap, until doubled in size, about 60 minutes in a warm room.

Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dissolve baking soda in cold water in a medium bowl and set aside.

Gently deflate dough into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a "snake" about 16-18 inches long. Twist into a pretzel shape as shown in the photo below.

Dip each formed pretzel in baking soda solution and place on prepared baking sheet. When all the pretzels have been dipped, sprinkle with coarse sea salt or coarse kosher salt and slide into the oven. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until dark golden brown.

Eat hot out of the oven, or freeze for later when cooled. Reheat at 375F for 5 minutes to re-crisp from frozen.

Makes 8 pretzels.

I love this Easter tablescape that I found over at Elizabeth Anne Designs. It is so simple but perfectly chic, with a vintage influence. It looks like it's taking place in a Victorian garden. I love the berry cartons used as mini Easter baskets and I adore the cream polka dot cake! Gorgeous! I would love to be a guest at this Easter table! I'm sure many of you have seen this adorable school inspired Save-the-Date floating around the internet but have you seen the actual wedding? The uber cute couple, Amber and Jeff, planned a fabulous bash with school inspiration dotted throughout the entire event. My faves?
