Banana Baby

I have been working on the perfect Brunch menu for a baby shower I am planning next month and found this little recipe delight, while browsing on the always fabulous Martha Stewart website. These baby's make me wish it was brunch time right now! Enjoy!

Bananas Foster Crepes:
Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup dark-brown sugar
  • 2 ripe bananas, cut into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of coarse salt
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup dark rum
  • 4 small Basic Crepes
  • 1/2 cup creme fraiche or vanilla ice cream
Directions:

  1. Warm butter and sugar in a saute pan over medium heat until butter melts, 1 to 2 minutes. Add bananas, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla, and cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat. Add rum. Return to heat. If using a gas stove, tip pan away from you carefully until the vapors from the rum ignite. (Or light with a long match.) Cook until flames stop, about 1 minute. Divide bananas among crepes; reserve sauce in pan.
  2. Fold each crepe in half, then fold in half again. Drizzle crepes with reserved sauce, and top with creme fraiche or ice cream. Serve immediately.

It's so fun to see bright colors and such cute little details, and believe me...there are many, many adorable little details to see. The fabulous Courtney at Joyful Weddings and Events put this whole little shindig together and even made the custom banners and cake table background! She can customize one for you too, if interested, at her etsy shop. Photography was done by Melissa Kelsey. Head over to Joyful's site to see all of the photo's. Absolutely gorgeous and super fun!

A Happy Housewife

I have seen quite a few bridal showers around the web but really loved the simplistic, and striking colors of this retro themed shower, featured over at Partyspot.com. I love the "Pimp My Cupcake" station where guests could decorate their cupcakes with various toppings. So cute!

Venue Coordinator vs. Wedding Planners

I recently came across this post from Elegant Engagements and thought they summed this topic up perfectly, in a much better way than I could! I'm sure for potential brides, this scenario comes up a lot, and there could be quite a bit of confusion without knowing the exact difference. I hope this helps to clear up any loose ends or unanswered questions!

A Venue Coordinator and a Wedding Planner: The Difference

Recently a potential bride with whom I felt that I clicked with emailed me to say basically: "thanks for your follow up, but we booked Venue X and they provide a wedding coordinator and so I don't need your services." I was sad for her because I really liked her and she has no way to know that the wedding coordinator promised to her is a venue coordinator, not a wedding coordinator. I'd like to explain the difference between the two.

A venue coordinator works for that venue. That is where their loyalties lie, and that is not a bad thing or a good thing, it just is. Their job is to sell the venue to brides, give out a list of preferred vendors, answer questions about the venue, assist with room layout and tasting, and make sure that your wedding follows the rules and regulations of the space. They may or may not help with the master Timeline of the wedding day and rarely do they help decorate or design for your reception. They do know what works and what doesn't in a space, so trust them if they say "that won't work!". Depending on how large the venue is, they may have four or more weddings they are juggling that weekend. On your wedding day, they may not even be the person you have been talking to all of these months, as it is a very challenging job and some venues tend to have high turnover.

Don't get me wrong, a venue coordinator's job is very, VERY important, but they are not your wedding coordinator. Neither is your DJ, a photographer, or florist. Yes, they all coordinate things that directly relate to them (a photographer will help with the Timeline as that affects pictures, etc), but they are not orchestrating every single detail of the event like an independent coordinator will.

As an independent wedding coordinator, our loyalty is to you, our client. Not your parents, photographer, videographer, DJ, florist or venue. An independent coordinator's job is to assess what level of service you need and to go above and beyond that. And to do it in a timely manner, with patience, and with a smile. Whether hired for "month of" coordination or full production, an independent coordinator will become the adviser and orchestrator of the entire production and how all of the vendors tie in together, as well as all of the millions of details that need to be dealt with. And this is just the logistical stuff. Then we have the emotions that come into play during the planning of a wedding. I'm not kidding when I say that half of what I do as a wedding coordinator is to act as a good old-fashioned shoulder to cry on! An independent coordinator will help you with wording of your invitations, encourage you to let your personality shine through, debate the pros and cons of the shades of Bashful vs. Blush roses, give you advice on sticky budget questions, advise you how to seat your divorced parents during the ceremony, remind you to hold your bouquet low as you walk down the aisle, and hug you goodnight at the end of the day.

A venue coordinator and an independent wedding coordinator are both extremely important as they each have a specific job that they are good at doing. A wedding with strong coordinators working hand in hand usually provides a seamless and stress free wedding day for all involved!

Feeling Green

Since tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day I figured I should feature a dessert recipe in honor of this very green filled holiday!

Chocolate-Peppermint Shortbread Cookies:

Ingredients:
Cookie Ingredients:
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks/6 oz/170g) butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate, melted, cooled slightly
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup semi-sweet miniature chocolate chips

Frosting Ingredients:
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick/1 oz/28g) butter, softened
1 tablespoon milk
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 drop green food color

Drizzle Ingredients:
1/2 cup semi-sweet miniature chocolate chips
1/2 teaspoon vegetable shortening

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine all cookie ingredients except flour and 1 cup mini chocolate chips in large mixing bowl. Beat at medium speed until creamy (1 to 2 minutes).

Reduce speed to low. Add flour; beat until mixture forms a dough (1 to 2 minutes). Stir in 1 cup mini chocolate chips by hand.

Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten to 1 1/2-inch circle with bottom of glass dipped in flour. Bake in preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes or until set. (DO NOT OVER BAKE.) Let stand 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet. Cool completely on wire rack.

Combine all frosting ingredients in small mixing bowl. Beat at low speed, adding milk, 1 teaspoonful at a time, if necessary until frosting is smooth. Frost cooled cookies. Place on waxed paper.

Place 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips and shortening in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH, stirring every 30 seconds, until smooth (60 to 90 seconds). Drizzle thin lines of chocolate over frosting with teaspoon. Let stand until chocolate is set (at least 30 minutes).

*If desired, place melted chocolate in small resealable plastic food bag. Cut tiny tip off one corner of bag to drizzle chocolate.*

Makes: 3 1/2 dozen cookies

Housewarming Party

I've been M-I-A, lately, working on a housewarming party for my little sister, who was on a serious budget. She just moved into her first condo and wanted to celebrate with some friends. Needless to say, I was super busy with the menu, and invites, and forgot my camera on the day of the actual event, but I did get pictures of the invites that I had put together before she mailed them out, so you can get an idea of the overall theme we had.

Oh Baby!

Recently I have been planning a baby shower for a good friend of mine, that will be happening in the next few months, so I have been pouring over many pictures of wonderful baby showers, but absolutely fell in love with this Bebe Bistro shower themed party that was held a few years ago. It was planned by Lynn Maestas and photographed by Melissa Jill. I just adore the diaper napkins! Such a cute idea!

Ooops!

This was a complete "Why didn't I think of that?" moment for me. I discovered this great little etsy shop while looking for some invitations for an upcoming baby shower that I am planning and found this little treasure instead. Quickits has created little kits for all of life's "uh oh" moments, and then some. The kits contain anything you could think of for that emergency, panic filled moment when something happens that you might not be prepared for. They are packaged in little white boxes and tied with colored, handmade ribbon belts. There are kits for sick days, bridal emergencies, hangovers, new parents, golf, and even wedding favor kits too! They also offer the plain boxes and ribbon to use with your own creative ideas. They are adorable, affordable and I must say, a great idea!
